Tip of the week
MSQ Carbon Monoxide
Category Boating
It’s a common practice among boaties that when the rain rolls in, you either bring down the side covers, clip on the clears or retreat to the cabin.
But a recent Maritime Safety Queensland Investigation revealed that this could be potentially disastrous, particularly for children, if there’s not enough ventilation.
Carbon monoxide is an odourless, tasteless gas that can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue and slowed reaction times. Prolonged exposure can cause brain damage or even lead to fatalities.
The team at Maritime Safety Queensland recommend all boaties have their boats engine and exhaust systems checked regularly and consider getting a carbon monoxide gas alarm installed to provide plenty of warning, before problems arise.
