Broadbeach Broadbeach is touted as the dining and shopping capital of the Gold Coast. This reputation began in 1957 with the construction of the Lennon’s Broadbeach Hotel. At five storeys high it was the tallest building on the coast. In the 70s the Pacific Fair Shopping Centre was also developed in Broadbeach and remains one of the largest shopping centres in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, Conrad Jupiters Casino, the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Monorail helped to shape the area into what it is today.
A number of Gold Coast personalities call Broadbeach home, including Paula Stafford, the inventor of the bikini and champion ironwoman, Hayley Bateup.
Watch Hayley compete at the upcoming Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on Kurrawa Beach. The event is the biggest of its king in the world, attracting 15,000 competitors and crew from around the country. Spectators can attend for free.
If you’re keen to make a weekend of it, Chris recommends the Wave Resort. It’s Broadbeach’s newest resort and possibly its most recognizable. Rooms start at $220 per night.
